From October 2021 to January 2022, PhD student Talal Asif (U. Laval) conducted a research internship with Professor Chris Freeman (his co-supervisor), at Bangor University, Wales, UK. Talal's research project aims to test rewetting alone and rewetting combined with the addition of phenolics on a large scale to enhance enzymic latch and to test whether these interventions can suppress enzymatic activities, reduce Sphagnum decomposition, enhance Sphagnum productivity and limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in rewetted and in Sphagnum farming. The internship at Bangor allowed Talal to learn the methods of enzyme activity analysis that he used for his samples. Indeed, Professor Freeman's lab has a great deal of expertise in enzyme analysis through decades of research in this area. | Talal in Wales, UK (photo from C. Moreover, from December 2021 to April 2022, Jeongeun Yun, a Ph.D. student with Professor Hojeong Kang at Yonsei University (South Korea), came to Université Laval in Quebec City to do a research internship. With her knowledge in the analysis of microbial activities, she was able to contribute to Talal Asif's project by analyzing the rRNA of bacteria, archaea, fungi and other microorganisms in peatland soil, which were amplified and quantified using a real-time PCR machine. | Jeongeun Yun in Quebec City |
