Sphagnum species are mosses which grow in humid environments. They play a particularly important role in ombrotrophic bogs where they form an almost continuous carpet. Sphagnum also provides peat moss with qualities that make it a highly-rated horticultural product.
Knowledge about the ecology of these mosses is essential to the development of re-introduction techniques.
